  • Check the online calendar for Natural History Trips from the River Exchange in Dunsmuir. Annual events include Herbal and Native Plant Walks, Wildlife Tours, Meadow Restoration and the Annual River Cleanup Festival.   • The Mount Shasta Trail Association website offers many trail descriptions for Mt. Shasta country, as well as conservation and volunteer opportunities.

  • Check out (and support) the area businesses who have become part of the Stewardship Fund of Far Northern California, created by Jefferson Economic Development Institute (JEDI) to take care of the natural, cultural and rural environments throughout Siskiyou County, CA. This Fund provides visitors, residents, and businesses with positive opportunities to give something back to or invest in the area they live visit, profit from, and enjoy.

  • Treat yourself to a Wildflower Walk in Siskiyou County. Siskiyou is one of the most botanically diverse counties in the state of California, and flowers are aboundant in a wide variety of habitats from early spring through late summer. Our Wildflower Walks page offers several locations. Check out the Shasta Wildfower Project, a beautiful website offering two mini field guides, one for selected flowers above 7000 ft on Mount Shasta, CA and one for selected flowers at Castle and Heart Lakes.

  • The Mount Shasta Trail Association website offers many trail descriptions for Mt. Shasta country, as well as conservation and volunteer opportunities.

    The McCloud River Preserve is one of California's aquatic jewels. The cool waters of the river roil with life. In the spring, clouds of emerging insects dance across the waters as they hatch, and trout are driven to fits of feeding frenzy. The McCloud has been a fisherman's paradise ever since its original inhabitants, the Wintu Indians, speared and trapped salmon and steelhead as the fish made their seasonal journeys from the sea. Open from sunrise to sunset, the Preserve offers three miles of hiking trails and a self-guided nature walk. Hikers, birdwatchers, and wildflower enthusiasts are invited to visit (keep in mind that the preserve is snowbound during the winter months-November through early April).

  • For the wildlife enthusiast, a visit to the Klamath Basin Wildlife Refuges is a voyage of never-ending discovery. Year to year and season to season the dynamic ebb and flow of wildlife is a process of constant change. When you visit greatly determines what you will see. stop by the Refuge Headquarters and Visitor Center when you first arrive. Refuge wildlife is colorfully described by exhibits and information regarding viewing opportunities, recent sightings, road conditions, and regulations is available. A non-profit bookstore offers wildlife-oriented books and other items. The visitor center is located on Hill Road, 5 miles west of Tulelake, California and 4 miles south of the California/Oregon line.

  • The Shasta-Trinity National Forest provides dozens of useful booklets and information packs for visitors to the Siskiyou County area. Download and print guides such as Birds of the Shasta-Trinity, Trees of the Shasta-Trinity, Wildflowers of the Shasta-Trinity, Wildlife of the Shasta-Trinity. Booklets such as Wilderness Ethics & Backcountry Information help you make sure your visit is kind to the natural life of the region.

  • The Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the outstanding natural environment and cultural values of Mount Shasta, one of the sacred mountains of the world. The group sponsors the Annual Mountain Film Festival in early Spring, and various events and projects throughout the year.

  • The Klamath Restoration Council hosts annual events, inlcuding Salmon River Fish Dives and the annual Jammin' for the Salmon festival. The Council, a project of the Karuk Tribe's Department of Natural Resources, seeks to restore and protect the uniquely diverse ecosystem and promote the sustainable management of natural resources in the entire Klamath River watershed.

  • On a River Dancers' Nature School Rafting Adventure, your trail is the beautiful Klamath River, which you'll share with the plant and animal communities that make this ecologically rich habitat their home. Each day includes structured natural history experiences involving the naming of plants and animals and discussions of their habitat along with unstructured time to discover their own place in nature.   • Lava Beds National Monument, the site of the largest concentration of lava tube caves in the United States, offers a wealth of natural history and environmental tours and programs. Caving and wildlife viewing, particularly birdwatching in the spring and fall, are the most popular activities at Lava Beds. Walks, evening slide programs, and cave tours are offered daily during the summer.

  • The Leave No Trace Principles provide sensible guidelines for visiting the natural environments. LNT encourages responsible, non-motorized outdoor activities with minimal impact on public recreational areas. Check out this fine organization!

  • Take a vacation that makes a difference. The Sierra Club Activist Trips will teach you everything you need-history, science, strategies, and techniques-to become an effective grassroots activist. By the end of the trip, you'll be inspired to bring your newfound skills back to your community, to take action and to help protect our planet.
