Mountain Climbing in Siskiyou County
The many wilderness areas of Siskiyou County offer countless adventures in mountaineering, backpacking and back country travel.
Climb Mount Shasta | Mountaineering Guides & Outfitters | Back Country Peaks and Rock Climbing

Summit climbs on Mount Shasta are popular year round. In warmer seasons, trails and high mountain areas open up in the Marble Mountains, the Siskiyous, the Eddys, the Russian Wilderness and lots more. Local fishing regulations vary, so be sure to check with the U. S. Forest Service, our excellent local sporting goods stores, or mountaineering guides.

The Glisse Fest, an annual mountaineering event on Mount Shasta, is featured in the San Francisco Chronicle. Click to read the article!

  Climbing Mount Shasta
Chris-Carr-photo There is no trail to the summit of Mount Shasta, although during the prime climbing season of May to September, the paths of earlier climbers may be detected along the popular Avalanche Gulch route. If you are inspired to climb Mount Shasta, but have little or no climbing experience, it is recommended that you hire a professional guide. Crampons, skill with an ice axe, and knowledge of mountaineering safety are necessary to make the journey.

Back Country Peaks and Rock Climbing
Marble-Mtns The remote mountains of Siskiyou County offer countless opportunities for back country adventures. Pristine alpine and glacial lakes with granite backdrops make peaceful, quiet camping places, while breathtaking panoramic views are your reward at the top of any ridge. World-class rock climbing is available at Castle Crags State Park and at other bouldering and climbing locations thrughout the county. Please educate yourself before venturing into the wilderness. Remember...back country travelers may encounter a variety of dangerous conditions. It is your responsibility to inform yourself about these inherent risks and take precautions.

The Marble Mountain Wilderness and Russian Wilderness areas west of Scott Valley are part of the Klamath National Forest . These beautiful wilderness areas offer many great peaks to bag, including Boulder Peak (8,299'), Kings Castle (7,405') and Black Marble (7,440') as well as northern access to the Trinity Alps.

Information on the Castle Crags Wilderness Area is found at the Shasta Trinity National Forest web site.

Black Butte, the 6325' volcanic peak just south of Weed, provides an excellent climb during spring, summer and autumn. A well-maintained trail leads up to the site of an old fire lookout station at the top. Information on the The Black Butte Trail, and many other area trails and climbs, can be found on the Publications Section of the Shasta Trinity National Forest web site.

The Pacific Crest Trail provides access to many backcountry areas as it winds through Siskiyou County. Check the Pacific Crest Trail Association web site. Mount Eddy (9,038') is a wonderful climb from the PCT or up the Sisson-Callahan Trail.

Can you name the largest volcano in Sisiyou County? Nope...not Mount Shasta, but the incredible mass of the Medicine Lake Highlands, the largest identified volcano in California. Find information on the Medicine Lake Highlands, at the California Recreation web site. Be very aware of sharp volcanic stone and obsidian if you hike and climb in this region.
