Mt. Shasta Ski Park extends season for extra weekend in April!

Screamin' or Sinkin'

The snow storm that hit the Mt. Shasta area in late March dumped a ton of new snow at the Mt. Shasta Ski Park. With 22 feet at the top and 10 feet at the base, the Ski Park has decided to extend the season so you all can enjoy all that snow a little bit longer.

Coming up Saturday, April 2nd the Park will host Sierra Nevada Brewery Day at the Park and the rescheduled Night Rail Jam and night skiing. During the Brewery event Sierra Nevada will have Pale Ale, Torpedo Ale, Tumbler, Summerfest, Glissade, Celebration, Kellerweis, Brown ale and “Beer Camp Beer” on tap. There will also be live music.
The Park will close on its original closing date of April 17th, but it will re-open the following weekend of April 22-24 for “Customer Appreciation Weekend” over Easter Weekend.
On closing weekend the Park will hold its Screamin’ or Sinkin’ Pond Skim Party, starting at high noon, on Saturday, April 16th. Hot Mess and The Billy’s will provide live music for the event.

Other events scheduled before the close of the season include the Coyote Classic on Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10; the Over the Hill Alpine Races on Saturday, April 9; The Gene Landsmann Alpine Races on Sunday, April 10; The Pond Skim Party on Saturday, April 16; and the Ski, Bike, Run and Paddle on Sunday, April 17.

New Year’s Eve at the Mt. Shasta Ski Park

New Years Eve festivities at the Mt. Shasta Ski Park will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Ski Park with fireworks, extended night skiing and fun for the kids. There will be live music by the Billie’s, the torchlight parade you can participate in, glow stick parade for the kids (they can get glow sticks, necklaces and bracelets), party favors and skiing from 3pm until 11:30 for just $16. To top it all off, a prime rib dinner with all the trimmings will be served up.

It’s also a great time of year to take to the slopes at the Ski Park – snow is falling as I type so it looks like the slopes will be in great shape for the holiday season. Plus, the Park will have live music in the lounge on Fridays and Saturdays from 4-7pm during the holidays.

January is Learn a Snow Sport Month, so the Ski Park will be offering specials on Learn to Ski and Learn to Board packages. You’ll find private and group lessons for kids and adults to get you started.

If you’re an experienced skier or ride, the Park is offering Backcountry – Beyond the Boundaries. This season the Ski Park teamed up with Shasta Mountain Guides to offer guided backcountry ski and snowboarder excursions from the resort. Guides will take you “Beyond the Boundaries” into the best of the best untracked stashes of powder in open glades, tucked away chutes, or through a giant moss covered old growth forest.

The views from the new backcountry warming hut and surrounding terrain is unprecedented. Best of all, you will be touring in the shadow of the awe inspiring and majestic Mt. Shasta.

There is plenty going on at the Mt. Shasta Ski Park – so get there and check it out. With the addition of a new parking lot over the summer, the Park can accommodate even more winter enthusiasts. If you’re looking for lodging options, check out the Mt. Shasta Chamber of Commerce and McCloud Chamber of Commerce for a list of area lodging. The Ski Park also has a few deals up its sleeve, with its Ski and Stay partners special offers.

The Weekend Skiing Forecast: 1/28/2010

After last week’s record-setting snowfall, the Mount Shasta Ski Park is operating everything – and the snow is fabulous.

With 12 feet of snow on the mountain, clear skis, and everything operating, it’s a perfect time for skiers to pack their gear and head to Mount Shasta for some seriously perfect ski conditions.

Backcountry skiers are advised that while conditions are generally good, there is still avalanche danger, and a visit to the Avalanche Center’s Web site is probably in order before heading up the mountain.

That said, there are tons of new (and fast) snow waiting for those willing to earn their turns on Mount Shasta.

The town and the ski park – after suffering some power outages last week – are operating again, and ready to make your stay in Siskiyou County a wonderful experience.

Free Sled Dog Rides for Kids on March 29th

Sled Dog rides for kidsThe 4th annual Free Dogsled Rides & Educational Day for Kids is set for Sunday, March 29th from 11 am till 2 pm outside of Mt. Shasta.  Bring your kids and grandkids for a short ride with a team of sled dogs and the chance to talk with mushers and skijorers (skiers pulled by dogs). Dogsled Express mushers Pat Campbell, Rick Cook, and Trevor Mitchell and their highly trained sled dogs giving short rides to children ages 4 through 10.

Siskiyou Snow Dog Sporting Association, with the support of Dogsled Express Rides and Racing and the Yreka Kiwanis Club, is conducting the event at the Dogsled Express rides location between the Mt. Shasta Nordic Center and Mt. Shasta Ski Park on Ski Park Highway off of Highway 89 between Interstate 5 and McCloud.  Sign in is at 10:30am and rides will begin at 11 am and continue til 2 pm.

While you’re there you can learn about the Siskiyou Sled Dog Races, held in January, that brought distance teams, sprint racers and skijoring teams to the Deer Mountain Snowmobile Park for three days of racing. This is a great time for kids to get to know the dogs and enjoy a winter snow setting.
Rides will be given on a first come in first serve basis.   Due to limited parking at the new Ski Park Highway location, there will be Snow Dog volunteers to help you park. Possible overflow will be handled by issuing numbers at a “Drive-through” and an approximate time to return will be given.  So pack a picnic, bring your sleds, skis, and snowshoes for a family snow day!

Spring days at the Mt. Shasta Ski Park

Mt. Shasta Ski ParkThe Mt. Shasta Ski Park recently got a nice review on Best Ski Resorts. We’ve had some fine spring skiing at the Ski Park lately, with lots of blue bird days. The Revolution Terrain Park is hosting the night Rail Jam Friday, March 20th (registration 2:30-4:30, event starts at 5pm). Coming up on the race hill through March: The Over the Hill Classic is Saturday, March 28th and the Gene Landsmann “Super Slalom” is Sunday, March 29th. You can find more info about these gentle, friendly races at the Mt. Shasta Ski Team website. Keep an eye out for demo days at the Ski Park as well – you can try out some new skis or a snappy new board, thanks to local shops The Fifth Season and Shasta Basecamp.

While you’re in the area, stop by the Mt. Shasta Nordic Center where conditions have been great lately for skate skiing. The locals have been out enjoying the trails, and new comers can sign up for lessons on the weekends. Coming up on March 21st the Nordic center will celebrate at the Ernie Woodfield Party Tour, a tribute to a long-time skier and teacher that includes poker on skis and fun and games for all ages.

If you’re coming up for spring skiing, Dunsmuir is a great place to stay. You can enjoy beautiful days on the slopes, and then come back to this Sacramento River town that is the first to show signs of spring. Cave Springs Motel offers rooms, rustic cabins and vacation rentals not far from the river and the Dusnmuir Botanical Gardens. At the other end of town, the Dunsmuir Lodge boasts four acres of beautiful land that comes alive in the spring. As an added bonus, Dusnmuir has the best dining in the county: Cafe Maddalena’s, Sengthong’s and the Cornerstone Cafe. Also see the recent post on new comer, A Wild Thyme Cafe.

Come on up for spring skiing and a nice stay in Dunsmuir. It’s a great place to get away without having to spend a great deal of money. Keep an eye out for the dogwood and red bud – they’re usually the first trees to bloom, bringing white and pink flowers to the canyon.

good times at the Ski Park!

New snow – yeah! My husband and I went up to the Mt. Shasta Ski Park today and made some turns! With the storms earlier this week the Park is getting better coverage – enough that they reopened the Coyote chairlift. There were folks in the Revolution terrain park hitting the 9 features that are open. The park has 15 groomed runs open, and there is good riding on the shoulders of the runs where you can get a powder teaser.

The National Weather Service is forecasting another storm tonight through Friday morning – 9 to 13 inches in Mt. Shasta and 11 to 17 inches at the Ski Park elevation. The roads should be cleaned up by late Friday, so plan on a weekend trip to the Park (but check the weather forecast before you go) and enjoy that new snow! Shasta Basecamp will be up on Saturday to do a demo, so ride some new skis or a board while you’re there! Good times ont the mountain.
