The town of Dunsmuir, along the Upper Sacramento River, is hosting a gallery walk this weekend – but it’s not what it may sound like. Rather than walking from gallery to gallery, the Dunsmuir Storefront Gallery tour of the town is past empty storefront windows that have been cleaned up and dressed up with art by local artists. The opening reception is Saturday, March 26th from 1-6pm. For more detials, visit the Dunsmuir Storefront Gallery Facebook page. It’s a fun way to see local art and a fun way to bring a sense of vibrancy to a town that’s looking for a new way to deal with tough economic times. As you walk through the town looking for Storefront Galleries you’ll also walk past the shops and restaurants that form the heart and soul of this old railroad town.

So as your checking the art, be sure to check out the open businesses as well. Dunsmuir is known for its excellent selection of dinner restaurants, and Cornerstore Bakery is the favorite for breakfast. There are several galleries downtown, like the Brown Trout, Janye Bruck-Fryer’s Ruddle Cottage. The recently opened Dunsmuir Brewery Works is a big hit for local brews, pub food and live music. Just a few ideas to get you started exploring Dunsmuir. Have fun!
It’s snowing lightly here in Mt. Shasta – just the kind of flakes that feel nice drifting down onto your cheeks. So get out and about. Today in Mt. Shasta there is an open studio show at 108 Old McCloud (from 10am-2pm) where a number of local potters are selling their wares. The Holiday Craft Fair continues today in Yreka as well, at 412 S. Main Street in the Bottling Works Mall from 10am to 5pm.
These shows offer a great opportunity to buy locally made goods. The show in Mt. Shasta is strictly art - abstract and realistic paintings, jewelry and lots of pottery: teapots, mugs, bowls, display pieces, spoon holders, decorative plates and more by a group of four local potters. At the Yreka show you’ll see a broader selection, with locally made foods and arts and craft. So get out there and shop – it’s great for all of us!
PS – the Mt. Shasta studio show will be open this coming Mon-Fri, Dec 15th-19th from 3-6pm.

Making use of bold colors and brush strokes, artist Susan Greaves of Redding, has created more than 20 new paintings of McCloud and the surrounding area that are now being shown at the McCloud Book Gallery. The exhibit McCloud Heritage and Other Landscapes features paintings of McCloud’s old buildings, Mt. Shasta, river scenes and rural living. The show opens August 23rd with the artist’s reception from 4 to 8pm and it will be on display through October. Refreshments will be served.More of Greaves’ paintings from the exhibit can be seen at the McCloud Book Gallery website. While you’re into town, be sure to cross the street to the Brown Dog Gallery, where you’ll find work by owner Claudia Ellis, fun gifts, and the wonderful handwoven rugs of weaver Lana Magnuson of Burney.
Located at 230 Main Street in the historic McCloud River Mercantile Building’s inner court, McCloud Book Gallery is open this summer Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (and sometimes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays). For more information, call the Book Gallery at 530.964.3273. The Brown Dog Gallery is located just across from the Mercantile at 307 Pine Street (530.964.2662).

Liberty Arts in Yreka has put together a show for the Independence Day celebration titled Liberty. The call to Siskiyou County artists asked for work in all mediums in response to the theme of liberty. “The ‘liberty’ exhibit hopes to draw artworks from a wide range of viewpoints – from our Founding Fathers’ notions of Liberty to the current debates in our nation today that draw attention to the interpretation of Liberty and how it is expressed/experienced or potentially denied.” That’s quite a call.
This new contemporary gallery on Yreka’s historic Miner Street looks to be shaking things up. Take a look at the show just coming down, at the Liberty Arts website. There are certainly some intriguing explorations of shape and form in that show. The Liberty show opens July 3rd, with a reception from 5-8pm. If you’re quick you might be able to squeak in to see the current show before it comes down. The Liberty show will be up to July 26th, so you’ve got time to experience Siskiyou’s take on the theme.
