• 50th Anniversary Celebration at Ringe Pool in Yreka. From 1 to 7 p.m. admission will be 50 cents per person or 61 cents for two people. The first 50 customers will receive a free soda.
• Poolside Luau to benefit the Dotty Olson Pool in Etna. The fundraiser goes from 6 to 9 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m.. Tickets are $12 for ages 10 and older, $6 for ages 4 to 9. Children ages 3 years and younger are free. To purchase tickets visit a Scott Valley Bank branch, Dotty’s in Etna or the Dotty Olson Pool office.  The fundraiser includes a dessert and silent auction.
• Want to know more about the history of Hilt?  The Siskiyou County Historical Society is hosting former Hilt resident Terry Tallis to present the “History of Hilt Comes Alive” at 2 p.m. at the Siskiyou County Museum. • The 3rd Annual Yreka Kid’s Block Party presented by Shoppe Serendipity will take place in downtown Yreka from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. The event is free and will be located on South Broadway Street (which will be blocked off to motor vehicle traffic for the event.)

Siskiyou County Farmer’s Markets

• The Dunsmuir Farmers Market will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and is located at the Children’s Park next to the library.  (The market is open every Saturday).
• The McCloud Farmer’s Market will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of the McCloud General Store and Building Supply. (The market is open every Saturday).
• The Montague Farmer’s Market will be open from 9 a.m. to noon in Railroad Park. Everything at the market is Siskiyou County grown.

The 4&20 Blackbird Festival

Each year, Spring and Summer bring the opportunity for new growth, and this year is no exception. On July 30th, the Mongo Party, RadioStar Studios, and Blackbird Event Promotions in partnership with the Weed Chamber of Commerce plan to celebrate this special time with the 4&20 Blackbird Music Festival. The goal of this festival is to raise funds to purchase a new street clock and signage for the town of Weed, as well as restoring the iconic “Weed Palace Theater” marquee.

Sean Watkins from the Grammy winning band Nickel Creek, and Indian tabla player Ty Burhoe were added last week to the already stellar lineup of musicians scheduled to perform at the 7th annual Summer String Summit concert July 6, 2011 in the College of the Siskiyous Kenneth Ford Theatre in Weed.

Produced by renowned acoustic musicians and educators Tashina and Tristan Clarridge, the Wednesday night concert starts at 7:30 p.m.

It will again bring together many influential and innovative musicians from the worlds of bluegrass, jazz, Celtic, old-time and Swedish folk music for an evening of music and dance.

Six-time Grand National Fiddle Champions and northern California natives Tashina and Tristan Clarridge have, literally, grown up in the company of these musicians. Acclaimed in their own rights, both have risen to become sought-after performers and teachers in the new American acoustic tradition.

Browsing the Dunsmuir Storefront Galleries

So as your checking the art, be sure to check out the open businesses as well. Dunsmuir is known for its excellent selection of dinner restaurants, and Cornerstore Bakery is the  favorite for breakfast. There are several galleries downtown, like the Brown Trout, Janye Bruck-Fryer’s Ruddle Cottage. The recently opened Dunsmuir Brewery Works is a big hit for local brews, pub food and live music. Just a few ideas to get you started exploring Dunsmuir. Have fun!

A little bit about Ms. Vinnik:

“This summer Suzanne Vinnik will take the stage as Musetta in Puccini’s La Boheme and cover Anna in Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins under the baton of Maestro Lorin Maazel during the 2011 Castleton Festival. During the 2011 – 2012 season she will perform Leila in Bizet’s Les pêcheurs de perles, Gretel in Hansel und Gretel, and cover Violetta in La Traviata with Pittsburgh Opera. Further engagements include an Opera Gala in Pforzheim Germany prior to making her Savonlinna Opera Festival concert debut. Performances this season included an appearance in the Grand Prize Winner’s Gala and Concert at the The Jumeirah Essex House honoring George Shirley and the late Shirley Verrett, the finals for the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera at Carnegie Hall, and Abagail in The Crucible with Mannes Opera. Upcoming engagements include excerpts from La Traviata with Mannes Repertory Orchestra, the Winner’s Concert for the Liederkranz Foundation at Carnegie Hall and a returning solo concert with the Red Scarf Society for the Performing Arts in Northern CA.”
