McCLOUD GOLF COURSE OFFERS EXTENSIVE UPGRADES
The McCloud Golf Course is the oldest nine-hole course in Northern California. It was built in 1927 by the McCloud River Lumber Company.
The board of directors would travel from Minneapolis for regular meetings and the course was put in for their enjoyment. The course, built on pasture land, maintained the field grass for the fairways and the greens were a lightly oiled sand.
In 1935 the course was opened to the community, and the greens were changed to grass. A few years later people from surrounding towns were allowed to play.
The course was originally built using teams of horses and high wheelers. No irrigation was necessary at first due to surface water which was plentiful. Irrigation of upper level areas were flooded from a ditch on the west side of the course. Tees and greens were watered with hoses and sprinklers at night until 1965. As the course became drier, a fully automated sprinkler system was installed by 1968.
There was great cooperation between the company owned golf course and the people who worked for and played the course until 1993. At that time the McCloud River Lumber Company was selling their land holdings and the course was purchased by the members.
The McCloud Golf Course has been extensively upgraded in recent years. There is a pro shop, serving lunch and beverages, a driving range, putting greens, electric carts and spectacular views of Mt. Shasta from every hole. Located just south of McCloud, the fees are :
$12 for 9 holes, cart for $9
$17 for 18 holes, cart for $18.
